Well done you have your first client! This is can be an exciting and daunting time since you have something to celebrate about but are also nervous for your first consultation. This is a chance to test your rapport-building and communication skills. Being a nervous wreck is not going to help you out, it is essential that you are properly prepared. Have a Plan
This should be created before your client walks in. You should already have some idea about your client —habits, activity level, goals diet and more. This can be done by emailing your client a small questionnaire when they show interest in seeking you as a personal trainer. Create a small list of questions that can help you in gathering a bit of information about your client. You only have to create this questionnaire once and use it for all your clients.
When the client walks in, you would already know a few things about them which would give you a chance to break the ice and put them at ease. That information will work as a guide for the rest of the consultation session and help you ask specific questions to build your relationship.
Determine Their Fitness Goals and Challenges
The next step after the pleasantries and initiating an ice breaking conversation, inquire about their goals. Ask them why they want to achieve them and what challenges do they normally face. The questionnaire can also guide you to ask relevant questions that you feel can help you assess the client better.
Inquire about their previous and current exercise routine, any diets that had followed and are following, their eating lifestyle, their activity level, any possible health issues or disorders. The more you know about your client the better you would be able to help them.

Assess Their Fitness Level
After that comes the assessment of their fitness level. Firstly take their weight and measurement and explain how this information is going to help them in setting goals and targets for them. Start measuring their cardiovascular fitness level for instance asking them to walk a mile on the treadmill, check their flexibility level by doing exercises like squats and lunges, and lastly, measure their level of strength through exercises like leg press, bench press and barbell squats.
Demonstrate the exercises you want your client to do first and talk them through each movement, all the while explain how you can help them in enhancing their strength, flexibility and their overall fitness. This assessment will give you a clear idea of the weaknesses and strengths of your client, show them that you are an expert and also help you in building the client-trainer rapport.
Offer Them Solutions
Once all the assessment is done, tell your client how you plan to help them achieve their fitness goals. Educated them about the steps you would be going through. Make sure you are clear, concise, and use simple words so that your client has a better understanding of the plan.
Always Follow Up
When the session is completed, don’t try forcing your client to sign up right there and then. Many individuals need time to make their final decision. However, always follow up if you don’t hear from them in a week by emailing them or calling them up.
